There was lots of action in DeFi this week— and most of it kicked off right after the very unfortunate $130m C.R.E.A.M. Finance hack. It’s the protocols third exploit in a short timeframe and a big blow for the entire space as this hack comes in as one of the largest in value for the DeFi community.
Following on from this, Twitter drama ensured between Yearn and AAVE, with Andre Cronje claiming that the same exploit could be carried out under AAVE’s contracts…. long story short there was a lot of below the belt back and forths between different members of the core teams, Justin Sun pulled out over $4 billion from AAVE, and a resulting governance vote to remove xSUSHI as a collateral option was passed.
However you want to look at it, building in DeFi is not easy and each day comes with its new set of challenges. One thing can be said about these events though, exposing a potential vulnerability to a Twitter audience instead of an appropriate back channel seems more likely to undermine us all. It’s better to serve the bigger picture and bury some of the animosity.
Silly Fails and Trolling
I don’t think there has ever been a bigger troll or silly fail. Hands down Facebook and Zuckerberg earnt this badge with flying colors. And, in case you somehow missed the announcement about their name change to Meta, you can rewatch the entire performance below 🤢
And, for those that thing we should respond to Zuck by changing how we reference or name the metaverse— whether that be ultraverse, hyperverse…. or something else— why would we even consider handing over terrain like that? Especially to a gatekeeping, bloodthirsty walled garden like Facebook and everything else around them. The metaverse is not owned by anyone, not one individual, group, company, corporate, it’s an immersive and persistent space which we all can access and be a part of owning.
Let’s keep building an open web3 metaverse. Because that’s the only one that makes any sense.
